Server's Guild
What is being a Server of the Altar?
Being a Server is being a helper or assistant to the Celebrant and all Clergy during the duration of normal Church Service, Funerals, Weddings and Unveiling of Tombstones, etc. Servers prepare the Church Altar before every service and make sure that the Priest's vestments and all the Altar Vestments are ready in time for the Service.
The Server's Guild Ministry in the Anglican Church is very important and should be approached with dignity, humility and respect. Every Server is obligated to know their responsibilities and perform the duties with diligence and dedication. The Server's Guild Ministry demands a lot of sacrifice, dedication and diligence from each member because of the responsibility that rests upon each one. All Servers are called and commissioned to assist in leading the corporate worship of Christ in the church.
History of the Servers Guild - The Patron, Saint Vincent
The patron saint of those who serve at the altar is Vincent, Deacon and Martyr, who lived during the late Third Century, and was martyred in the year 304. He is remembered in the Anglican Church calendar on January 22. St. Vincent is remembered for his faithfulness, his loyalty to his responsibilities, and his love of God.
These are the qualities that should characterize the life of those who are called to serve at the altar. The duties of a server are rooted in the love for God, the willingness to serve Him responsibly, and loyalty, which is demonstrated in the way servers go about their tasks. Love, faithfulness, and loyalty are the qualities a server should seek to show.
